Net Migration To The UK Is Up Despite Pandemic
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, that still poses a massive danger, net migration to the United Kingdom remains incredibly high.
282,000 Non-EU Citizens Arrive In The UK As Net Migration Rises
Figures have recently shown that 282,000 more non-EU citizens have come to the UK compared to those that left in 2019. This is the highest figure since the information was first gathered back in 1975. The Office for National Statistics have said that this statistic is the highest level for 45 years.
The ONS went on to say that this rise in net migration figures is from individuals hailing from non-EU countries and more specifically, students from China and India. Contrasting this, the number of people arriving to the UK from EU countries has “steadily fallen”.
For context, in 2019 there was an estimated 49,000 more EU citizens that came to the UK over those whom left. This compared to the “peak levels” of 2015 and 2016 which saw 200,000 coming to the UK, according to the ONS. Collectively, 2019 saw the arrival of an estimated 270,000 individuals who were planning to stay for 12 months or more.
The Impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19)
The deputy director of the University of Oxford’s Migration Observatory, Rob McNeil, has said it was “too early to quantify how the pandemic will affect migration to the UK”.
He has also said that it was clear that there will be consequences of Coronavirus and that they “already reach right across the immigration system – from worker’s inability to travel to take up work and employers’ difficult bringing seasonal workers to British fields, to sharp reductions in the number of people detained and deported”.
He said the crisis raised questions on whether employers in the UK will still want to recruit from overseas or if international students will still apply and take up places at British universities.
Matthew Fell, chief UK policy director of the Confederation of British Industry, said businesses were “currently prioritising safety and protecting jobs during this period of unprecedented stress”, saying: “For now, some businesses are less likely to hire from overseas than before the crisis. Time is running out if government and business are to implement this well.”
Does COVID-19 Impact Marketing?
Coronavirus has undoubtedly had a massive impact on the marketing, communications and advertising industries. We are not the only ones affected by this, many industries have suffered on a great degree. Despite all of this, there is still the individuals who have arrived here in the past 12 months that are prime target customers as they will be looking to discover new brands.
This is where your business comes in. You can provide these people with your services/products and subsequently build a brand loyalty with these new consumers.
