Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month 2023: Embracing Diversity with GottaBe! Ethnic

10th October 2023
 /

As we near the end of Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s crucial to pause and reflect on the significance of this time. This month-long celebration, spanning from September 15th to October 15th, presents the opportunity to explore, appreciate, and pay tribute to the vibrant and diverse cultures of Hispanic/Latinx people.

Despite the fact that there are more than 250,000 Latin Americans residing in the UK, with many situated in London, Latin communities have been underrepresented and are misunderstood.

So, in light of this, our blog post aims to acknowledge the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 by highlighting its significance and accepting the invaluable contributions of Hispanic/Latinx communities.

The Significance of Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month has a history that stretches back to 1968, when it was initially established as Hispanic Heritage Week by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Later, in 1988, it was expanded into a month-long celebration by President Ronald Reagan.

The decision to begin on September 15th was deliberate, as it coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua, with Mexico and Chile celebrating their independence days on September 16th and September 18th, respectively.

Why Hispanic Heritage Month Matters

Hispanic Heritage Month is not just a time for celebration; it serves as a platform for acknowledging the outstanding contributions made by Hispanic/Latinx individuals and communities to society, culture, and the global community.

Here are some reasons why this month is so important:

1. Cultural Richness: The Hispanic/Latinx communities are incredibly diverse, encompassing various cultures, traditions, languages, and customs. From the colourful festivals of Brazil’s Carnival to the rhythmic dances of the Dominican Republic’s merengue, there is a wealth of cultural diversity to explore and appreciate.

2. Notable Achievements: Hispanic people and Latin Americans have left a significant mark in various fields, including arts, sports, politics, science, and business.

3. Cuisine: The culinary traditions of Hispanic/Latinx communities have introduced us to a multitude of delectable dishes. These flavours have become integral to global cuisine, enriching our palates and dining experiences.

4. Language and Identity: Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages globally, fosters cultural understanding and unity. Embracing the Spanish language allows individuals to connect with their heritage and maintain their cultural identity.

5. Arts and Culture: The influence of Hispanic/Latinx culture in the arts and music scenes is profound. From the mesmerising works of Frida Kahlo to the vibrant rhythms of salsa and reggaeton, artists continue to captivate audiences worldwide, leaving an indelible mark.

Our guests, Argentina Rosario (who’s Dominican and works as a chef and entrepreneur) and Marlyn Ortiz (who’s Venezuelan and works as a pharmacist), both share their experiences and the differences between the UK and Latin America.
